Case Study 8

How a Global Pharma Company Built Their ‘Blue-Sky’ Plant

One day, the Head of Manufacturing for my Swiss-based client said, ‘In your TYM Program, you create a Blue-Sky Vision for each plant. And then we retrofit it into the plant with the Practical Vision.

‘We’re going to build a new pharma plant in Singapore. And we know what we’ll make there. I’d like you to work with the project team to create the Blue-Sky Vision. And then we’ll build the plant as close as we can to achieve that.’

Analysis and Findings

After a survey of the plans, I showed them how:

  • They could make products faster. In just 1 day,
  • They could design-in maximum productivity, and
  • They could make products 100% right first time.

Implementing these would slash costs, maximise profits, and enhance customer service. Specifically, it would make it the best performing plant in the group.

TYM Program Implementation

I worked with the project team through the design and build stages to meet our TYM goals

We identified the necessary steps, assigned responsibilities, and developed an implementation plan highlighting financial and business benefits.

The board approved our plan. Over the first six months, I guided the new management and staff to realise these goals.

Transformative Results

From the get-go, the plant outperformed all others in the group. The management and staff, largely locally based, just accepted the TYM principles and ways of working. Situation normal for them.

Compelling Conclusion

The success of this plant led to this process becoming the standard for future new-build sites.
